Opened in 1976, Alexander Stadium is an international athletics venue in Perry Barr, Birmingham, which hosts major competitions, such as the Diamond League Series and British Championships. Since 2011, the stadium has been the headquarters of the British Athletics, following the initial renovation of the 5,000-seater East Stand.
As the flagship venue of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Alexander Stadium will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as track and field competition, which is scheduled to take place from the 2nd to 7th August.
In recent years, the stadium has undergone extensive redevelopment and modernisation, which will increase the legacy capacity to 18,000, quadrupling the number of spectators. As Official Overlay Supporter to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, GL events UK will be installing temporary grandstands, which will increase the stadium’s Games-time capacity upwards of 32,000 spectators.
In addition to the temporary seating grandstands to the North (6,674 seats) and South (7,612 seats) of the stadium, GL events UK is also providing giant temporary lighting towers, video board infrastructure, containment, hospitality structures and media tribunes as part of their extensive overlay delivery.
Post-Games, the upgraded stadium will continue to stage large sporting events, with the new facilities also set to host social activity programmes for the benefit of the local community. Such initiatives are part of the bigger regeneration project for the district of Perry Barr, which is set to receive over £700 million in investment as a result of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Including Alexander Stadium, GL events UK is suppyling overlay infrastructure at as many as 12 Commonwealth Games venues for Birmingham 2022. Keep an eye out for further venue updates as each of these locations is revealed.
